Vandeventer + Carlander Architects C3 Cabin Plans
“As the world becomes more complex and demanding of time, energy and money, there is for many a need to reduce and simplify. The C3 cabin was born out of that desire.” Read the rest of Vandeventer + Carlander Architects C3 Cabin Purchase and Sale Agreement.
The plans for this 352 square foot gem used to go for $2,000 and they have been slashed to $850. Not a bad deal. If you are looking for a small space with abundant natural light and good ventilation – check out the C3.
With multiple windows on both levels, doors that open on three sides to working outdoor spaces, the C3 is a functional work of art. Originally built for a NW client, the C3 is now available to us all in a small package that offers simple construction and easy maintenance. The plans spec a fiber cement and metal panel exterior. The question is: “how much can I build one for?”
The C3 won the Best Product award in Apartment Therapy’s Year End Roundup. The C3 has had great press on materialicious, mocoloco, and TreeHugger.
Cool cabin. There is mention of a possible kit for construction. Has this happened and if so, how much ?
Hi Keith,
I did some poking around and did not find any information about a kit (which would be exciting.) I would contact them directly if you are interested. Please let us know what you find out!

I like this cabin. I would use it as my home. Would it work in Newfoundland where the winters can be snowy and cold? Could I augment this with electric heat; some dry wall; What washroom facilities does it contain?
Thank you
Pat Flynn
Hi Pat,
Considering that the plan was originally for a client in the Pacific Northwest (I don’t know exactly where) it might work for you. Being that the plans are available, you could show them to your builder or architect or even ask Vandeventer + Carlander to retrofit the design for your needs. Good luck and let us know what you find!

I didn’t see a refrigerator in the kitchen pictures. Does it have one?
It’s such a cute little cabin. I would love to have one on a little piece of property we have on the Washington coast.
One more question. Is the metal fence around it a structural feature or is it for design?
Hi Linda,
We don’t see a refrig either but can’t imagine there not being one. The cabin was originally designed for a client in the northwest. Our recommendation is to contact them directly if you are interested. Please let us know what you find out!
PS The ‘metal fence’ doesn’t seem like it is structural.
Hi, I see de square footage but not the footprint of this cabinn. We are looking for a guest house but our lot is narrow with trees. Martin
This cabin, is quite interesting, if your interested in something similar but don’t want to buy a ‘kit’ that other people have, contact me. I am a Masters Student of Architecture and would be interested in doing some design for some real clients. Depending on the size of the design, it could be done for free or conisderably less than approaching an architect. So you know my interests lie in sustainable practice, not just through material use and passive technologies but also through sustainability through use. Hope to hear from you.
Hi Graddesign,
That is an excellent offer. I hope some of the readers of Small House Style take you up on it. Does the offer stand for any of the other houses we feature or might feature in the future?
Thanks again.
